Why Fashion-Related Majors Are the Best

By Amanda Cohen on September 28, 2017

People who just entered college and are trying to get the feel of things have different sources of guidance. Many of your friends will try to influence you to major in something “profitable,” like business, communications, something medical, economics, etc. I want to warn everyone against these influences; if business and medicine is your thing, then have at it, but the majority of people are probably not sharing your same sentiments.

There is a lot of pressure on college students to be the ideal student, and eventually the ideal candidate for a job right out of college, but that doesn’t mean you should sacrifice your dreams to conform with many students worldwide. I want to use this article to not only tell you about the benefits to majoring in something in fashion (if you are a fashionista) but also to shed light on the fact that it’s okay not to major in something more common!

Read on for some inspiration.

Reason #1: A fashion major ? designer

People often get confused because, when they think about a major in fashion, they think about becoming a designer. That is not the case at all. There are so many majors that apply to different areas of fashion. Graphic design and interior design are great majors for those of you who want to go into helping designers set up and make their fashion shows come to life. The clothing at a fashion show is equally as important as the way it’s displayed.

If you want to go into the business side of fashion, consider majoring in marketing and/or communications and you can explain to employers how you plan to use your major to pursue your love of both fashion and marketing. If you aren’t 100 percent sure about fashion, but you want to do something within the realm, major in art. Art can help you become a designer or it can help you aid in designing stores, fashion shows, etc. Of course, you can always major in fashion if you want to become a designer.

Reason #2: Fashion is a form of expression

College is tough. Period. No question about it. Whether you are majoring in something medical, something art related, or something fashion related, there is going to be a lot of work, and therefore it is important to have an outlet of some sort. Many college majors related to fashion involve some sort of creativity, and can, therefore, be a great outlet from the random credit requirements that you have to fill while you’re in school.

If you are majoring in fashion, take time to go to the studio and unwind with some drawing, some designing, or just general organizing of the fabrics and tools that you get to work with every day. Get mesmerized by the colors and textures of the materials that will, someday, be turned into a beautiful dress by you. Try on clothes that you’ve designed and hold your very own fashion show; it may not be New York Fashion Week, but it’s yours and it’s a way for you to express yourself and relieve your stress.

If you want to relieve stress and express yourself, sit in your bed with your favorite takeout and sketch designs in your sketchbook … maybe you could even listen to your favorite music or television show in the background. Regardless, use fashion’s creative outlets to express yourself and to relieve stress.

Reason #3: It’s different and uncommon

When I used to be a pre-medical student (let me just take a moment to let that sink in), I was told by every advisor, college representative, professor, etc. to major in something that had nothing to do with the sciences. I was confused … why wouldn’t I major in something science-related if I’m going into the medical field?

Having an unusual major, for example, fashion, makes your graduate school applications and your job applications stand out. If you’re pre-medical or pre-law, you have to take all of the credit requirements for that career track, so why not mix it up and do something fun with your major that will make you stand out. Fashion is super uncommon but super awesome. Most people aren’t fashion majors when going into medicine or business or law, so why don’t you do something special to show that you are unique, well-rounded, and a viable candidate.

Even if fashion is not your passion, there are still many benefits to majoring in something related to the field. Who knows — maybe you will even discover an unopened interest and will strut your stuff on a major runway. Or, you can also do this just to have fun! School is hard and serious, but don’t take life so seriously. Have fun and explore potential interests; I promise you won’t regret it!
